Now offering Breast MRIs in Missoula!
We’re excited to announce that Montana Imaging Center is now offering Screening Breast MRI—a fast, powerful tool to detect breast cancer earlier and more accurately, especially in women with dense breast tissue. This advanced screening scan, called Abbreviated Breast MRI (AB-MRI), is available Fridays only at our Missoula location.
What is AB-MRI?
AB-MRI is a shorter, more affordable version of a traditional breast MRI. The scan takes just 10–15 minutes, requires no radiation, and is highly sensitive at detecting early cancers—often before they can be seen on mammograms or screening breast ultrasounds (ABUS)
It’s a safe, comfortable, and effective screening option for women who want extra peace of mind
Who Should Consider a Screening Breast MRI?
AB-MRI is an excellent option for women who:
- Have dense breasts (which can make cancer harder to detect on mammograms,)
- Want a more sensitive screening in addition to mammography which can miss up to 75% of breast cancers.
- Have a family history of breast cancer but don’t meet criteria for a full diagnostic MRI
- Have elevated lifetime breast cancer risk (often 15–20% or more)
- Simply want peace of mind with the most advanced imaging available

What is a Screening Breast MRI?
A Screening Breast MRI uses magnetic fields (not radiation) to create highly detailed images of the breast. It’s much more sensitive than a mammogram and can detect small cancers earlier—especially helpful if you have dense breast tissue.
What’s the difference between a full breast MRI and an AB-MRI?
AB-MRI (Abbreviated Breast MRI) is a shorter version of the full scan, designed for screening only. It takes about 10–15 minutes, uses less contrast material, and still provides excellent cancer detection. It’s not meant for women with known problems or symptoms—that would need a full diagnostic MRI.
How much does it cost?
AB-MRI at Montana Imaging Center is $500. Some insurance plans may cover it, depending on your risk factors—we’re happy to help check.
Is it covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by plan. If you’re considered at elevated risk for breast cancer or have a history of dense breasts, some insurers may reimburse part or all of the cost. Call us and we’ll help you sort it out.
Do I still need a mammogram if I get a breast MRI?
Yes—MRI doesn’t replace mammography. It’s a supplemental screening tool, especially helpful for women with dense breast tissue or higher risk. Think of it as an extra layer of protection.
Does it hurt?
Not at all. There are no needles (aside from a small IV for contrast), no radiation, and no compression like with a mammogram. Most patients find it easy and comfortable.
When will I get my results?
Our board-certified radiologists will review your scan, and you’ll typically get results within a few business days.
Do I need a doctor’s order?
NO! You’ll need a referral from your healthcare provider for AB-MRI. If you’re unsure how to get one, give us a call—we’re happy to walk you through it.
